First, a few words of history about Julian menswear and then a few more words on my passion for Alexander Julian men's clothing, with the hope that my words will resonate with someone out there who has Julian items they'd consider parting with. Alex Julian is an American designer, born in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, who gradually rose to international prominence after launching his first menswear collection in 1975. He remained active throughout the 1980's and into the 1990's, transitioning away from fashion design in 1994 to dedicate his considerable talents to his home furnishings lines. He returned to apparel design in 2002, with the launch of "Alexander Julian Private Reserve", a very exclusive collection of men's (and, as of Fall 2004, women's) apparel, featuring unique fabrics unavailable anywhere else in the world. I first fell under the spell of Alex's textiles in 1983, the day I walked into his Georgetown "Alexander Julian Shop", then just opened. This first visit was the catalyst for my 25-year long adventure in documenting Alex's singular art. My principle interest remains to acquire apparel dating from the first phase of Alex's design career (1975-1994), the labels of which are contained in the attached photo.
